Bedford & District & Cambridgeshire - 25 April 2015

Thanks to Sally and the show management team for the invitation to judge here again. Thanks also to Sylvia who stepped in to steward for me on the day, and coped cheerfully with a busy day. It was a challenging one at the end when in judging BOV Oriental for the Bedford show I had to decide between the rival claims of two excellent Spotted Tabbies from the same stable, CH HEMLOCK SPOTTY MULDOON (brown) and PR HEMLOCK ALFREDO FERRARI (chocolate). The adult had an amazing degree of masculinity considering his youth and a superb outgoing temperament, while the neuter was rather more retiring and though also very mature for his age didn't have quite the other's sheer impact - one the other hand though both boys had very good patterns, his was better, and so was his colour, with some warmth to his ground colour which the adult almost entirely lacked. Though my decision was for the neuter, it was not by much and I would not have been surprised if it had been reversed in the other show.

Open Classes

Cambridgeshire Imperial Grand Champion Male

IGCC Sharp-Popple's GRCH DENSON WIGGINS (OSH c) 9 Sep 13
A handsome lad of very good type, quite mature for his age if not quite yet the finished article. Longish even wedge, good width at the top, well set large ears. Profile straight apart from a small bump on the nose, firm chin and level bite. Eyes of very good shape and set of a bright green which though I found acceptable I would ideally prefer to have a little more depth. Long muscular body, long legs with neat paws, tail needs an extra fraction. Colour a slightly dark lilac sound to the roots, though to may eyes lacking the pinky appearance which the standard describes but I have almost never seen. Very short close coat of excellent texture. Superb temperament, excellent presentation. At this level rather a borderline case at present, but just making the grade.
2 (Res IGCC N/A) Denyer's GRCH DARDSONG BANOFFEE PIE (OSH m) 10 May 10
A mature lad of good type. Longish wedge with a small pinch, showing heavy jowls, needing a little more width at the top, large ears set in line. Small dip in profile, firm chin though rather shallow chin, bite level. Eyes of very good shape and set, a brilliant deep green in colour. Long muscular body, long legs with neat paws, tail needs an extra fraction. Colour a darkish lilac-based caramel which I should prefer to show more obvious browny tones, rather unsound. Coat a fraction long and initially a little open, but it improved as he relaxed and was finally suitable close lying and of good texture. Excellent temperament if a little wary, excellent presentation.

Colour a darkish warm chestnut (a much better colour out of his pen than in it), sound to the roots, close lying coat of excellent texture. Excellent temperament and presentation.

A mature girl of very good even unexaggerated type. Medium length even wedge, a little broad in the muzzle, good width at the top, large ears well set. Points a darkish warm seal, lightly shaded body, short close coat rather harsh in texture. Excellent temperament and presentation. I would unhesitatingly have awarded a certificate - BUT unfortunately she had a spot of depigmentation on her nose leather which in my estimation amounted to the withholding fault of incorrect colour of nose leather. Such a pity.
